non-standard language notes

i use some custom mods on the english language in the interest of improving it. just be aware:

new words: ey/em/eir/eirs/emself (gender-neutral pronouns)

respelt words: tho, thru, thoro, enuff, ruff, tuff, coff, troff, drout, laff, lafter, hight

i don’t really respect neopronoun preferences, rather i use these neutral pronouns when requested or when generic (tho in the former case, i get shamed into using they sometimes). i find assuming genders presumptuous and unhealthy, and singular they awkward and degenerate (compare historic thou → you merger), and think it’s important that, when a new word is needed, a new word is made. i’ve used these words consistently since 2015

i’ve only respelt 12 words (and their derivatives) and it’s clear what these words are meant to be. that’s cos i wanted to be ahead of the curve just enuff to incite change without making my writing look distracting. so i targeted an especially shitty word set (ugh/igh words). interestingly, usa spellings are generally superior to british spellings, but i use the latter for cultural identity cos i dislike american culture. the exception is just that ugh word set (so plow, sluff, draft). these 12 words i only committed to full-time in sept 2024

i’d like to also make changes like, say, the past-tense ught set (caught/thought → caut/thaut), aigh/eigh (eight/straight/weigh → eit/strait/wey), short-e stuff (dead/friend → ded/frend), and even stuff like are/was/were → ar/wos/wer. but you can imagine how hellish all that’d be to read lol. one day, these’ll be a bit more widespread informally and so easier to make the change

new york travel log

a lil write-up i found of my trip to new york city. i visited at the tail-end of a uni friends road trip, but they all had to fly back on easter sunday (lmao) cos they were too scared to cancel their obligations, so i rebooked my return for 2 days later (saving ~£150)

we visited downtown (wtc), statue of liberty, central park, broadway, times square together, and our story here begins after they headed home…

Sunday evening, I first went behind the Lincoln center into this huge open space with no1 in it to chill. Then I got a train to lower east side, walked around Bowery, popped into this bar [Bowery Electric] that reminded me of a fav at home [Mau Mau] as I walked past, ended up seeing a good band [Sooner], like a pop/new-waveish take on Sonic Youth.

then went to Vanessa’s dumplings (wooo reddit), good cheapish food. Toilet has to be seen to be believed. Then walked down the road to Rockwood music hall. expected an actual hall, got like a boiler room. nice venue but trash acts. headed home, got lost, arrived 0:30. woken up at 1:30 by some dude in the hostel [NY Moore] playing loud music. standard

Monday, I walked the high line elevated disused railway park (Chelsea; SW of Central Park). Good but bare tourists (couldn’t wake up early enuf to skip them)

It ends at this railway yard by the hudson. sick visuals.

then went down and walked about Chelsea. Nice touristy indoor market (got a Japanese taco..) but otherwise really chill area.

Got a train to downtown brooklyn. It started raining hard. Nice europeanish side streets and coffee shops. The riverside has cool parks, piers, naturish stuff. An upcoming area called Dumbo haha (“Down under Manhattan bridge overpass”)

Walked over brooklyn bridge, centre-aligned footbridge over the roadway

Went by some nice federal buildings (city hall n dat), then walked around Chinatown. Browsed thru an arcade and knockoff cd/dvd store. Tried to get job at Tina Employment Agency lol jk.

Then drifted back to lower east side, met up with Nitzan from couchsurfing for chat and 2 eps of the twilight zone. Nice view from his tower’s rooftop.

Rain finally stopped. Walked to east village, then west village, past the corner from the Paul’s boutique album art, past Washington square park with an

hmm, my msg cut off here and idk where that sentence was goin so i’ll fill in the rest from mem

Washington Square Park was a nice sunset sitdown, and i walked up and down Bleecker St to get there – The Bitter End and the ug boxing club caught my eye (also do me a favour and listen weds morn 3am if you’ve never heard acoustic sound of silence). got a peek into old cbgb (+ blondie mural) but it had just closed for the eve unforch

Then walked to greenwich village, had run out of money (cash-only nyc) so dossed around a bit looking at all the jazz and comedy venues (iirc i was around just after robert glasper residency at blue note and just after christian scott fuuuuk), eventually walking into a 24/7 mcdonalds round midnight and paying to withdraw cash from an atm (“only” $1.29! stupid americans). headed on back

Last day, went to williamsburg. got off the L at bedford ave, best falafel of my life (update: as of summer 2024) was from around the corner there, then hiked to domino park to watch the river and the kids play. finally, walked up to rough trade nyc to browse some vinyl and take it all in, and in less than 24h i was back in rough trade east in ldn to see ezra collective (gig 25). shouts to new york :)

my extra 2 days in nyc marginally cost me -£8 m8. travel alone! u get to do much cooler shit, your interests, your way 🌈
